NEW DELHI: Mumbai-based Turkish-Iranian origin actor Rayya Labib who was born in the North-Eastern state of Assam, today condemned the new Taliban diktat banning women patients in Afghanistan from being treated by male doctors.
“SHAME! They will let them die, but will not let them be treated by male doctors,” she wrote on her Twitter and Instagram handles, while joining various international women’s rights groups in condemning the Taliban move.
As per a new order by the Taliban government, women in Afghanistan’s Balkh province (and several other places) cannot visit a male doctor for treatment.
According to reports, the Directorate of Public Affairs and Hearing of Taliban Complaints announced a fresh diktat, saying women are not allowed to visit male doctors anymore and no education to women as well, so no female doctors either.”
In an exclusive report by news outlet WION, Taliban’s new ruling also banned male doctors from treating female patients and directed every hospital to keep a check on it.
Rayya traces her ancestry to Turkish-Iranian origins, but was born in Assam in North-East India, where she finished her schooling and college, before moving to Mumbai to pursue her dream of acting and modeling. She is the fifth generation of descendants who hailed from Turkey and later moved to Iran, before settling in various other parts of the world.
