International Tawang Marathon attracts 4,580 participants from 27 states; 10 from Ethiopia

Itanagar, Oct 24 (IANS) In a spectacular event on Thursday, the 2nd edition of the International Tawang Marathon was held in the beautiful high-altitude town of Tawang, coinciding with the United Nations Day.

Jointly organised by the Arunachal Pradesh government and the Indian Army, this year’s marathon attracted 4,580 participants, including 1,199 women, from 27 states across India and ten participants from Ethiopia.

Significantly, an 80-year-old runner from Mumbai participated in the marathon, held at an impressive altitude of 10,000 feet above sea level, showcasing the event’s appeal to individuals of all ages.

Defence Spokesman Lt Col Mahendra Rawat said Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, along with General Officer Commanding of Gajraj Corps Lt Gen Gambhir Singh, flagged off the Tawang International Marathon, also called the ‘Queen of High-Altitude Runs’.

He said that set against the stunning backdrop of the Eastern Himalayas, the marathon presented a significant challenge, with runners navigating steep inclines and sharp descents that tested their endurance in the high-altitude terrain.

Participants were rewarded with breathtaking views of Tawang’s pristine landscape along the route, Lt Col Rawat said, adding that there were various categories in the marathon, including the full and half-marathons, and 10 km and 5 km races.

According to the defence PRO, beyond being a race, the Tawang Marathon provided an economic and cultural boost to the region.

The influx of thousands of participants and visitors greatly benefitted local businesses, particularly in tourism and hospitality.

“The event showcased Tawang’s potential as a world-class adventure tourism destination while highlighting the rich cultural heritage of the area. Visitors had the unique opportunity to experience the traditions and lifestyle of the indigenous Monpa community,” Lt Col Rawat said.

He said additionally, the marathon strengthened connections between the local population, the Indian Army, and the government.

The collaborative effort in organising the event emphasised the deep bond shared between the people of Arunachal Pradesh and the Indian Army.

The International Tawang Marathon has firmly established Tawang on the global marathon map, reinforcing its reputation as a premier destination for adventure, culture, and community spirit.

The Tawang Marathon also aims to promote fitness, healthy living, and the spirit of sportsmanship.
